The Home Front
Charlotte - Mecklenburg 1941 - 1946
Click

When war was declared in December 1941, boys dropped out of school and enlisted immediately. The work force changed, particularly for women, as men were drafted or enlisted and left the area to serve in the military. Ration books, blackouts, gold stars and military personnel became commonplace. Charlotte and Mecklenburg County hosted thousands of soldiers, sailors, medical personnel and others committed to the war effort. The Charlotte Chamber of Commerce promoted the city and made it easier for military personnel to adapt.

This exhibit shows a small piece of the effort made by many citizens of Mecklenburg County.
