Charlotte was a small town in 1942, and the rest of the county was mostly farmland. A new way of life was thrust upon residents when an ammunition plant, the Quartermaster Depot and Morris Field brought thousands of people to this area and became some of the largest places of employment. In fact, the state of North Carolina was host to many war-related industries and agencies.
